|Subjects:||1) The talk by Jane is about her Great Grandfather George Piercy who founded a Mission in Canton, China in 1851. He was a farmer's son from Pickering, North Yorkshire. His mission was achieved despite fierce opposition and the loss of his wife and child. His wife he had met at Nunnington Hall. After 30 years he returned and continued mission work in the docklands of the East End of London for the Chinese there. His affection for China was boundless and he is revered today by many in China. 2) "For the Love of China", In the mid 19th century two young women left the gentle green hills of Yorkshire and Windermere. They swopped their easy lives for the heat, dirt and hostility of Canton. Their aim was to make life better for the Chinese girls and women, many living closed lives, often with bound feet. Their names were Jane Wannop Piercy and Mary Gunson. Jane married the love of her life, a Wesleyan Missionary and followed him out to China and Mary followed a few years later to work in the school Jane had started. The talk will cover many aspects of their lives which Jane has researched from letters and records. Various Chinese objects illustrate the talk.
3) A presentation with photographs of a recent trip to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
