| Subjects: | The Work of the Mercy Ships. Alan has worked with the charity Mercy Ships for the last 10 years in a variety of West African countries. His talk will explore the challenges and rewards of providing medical services and education to populations who would otherwise have no access to them. The History of Anaesthesia Anaesthesia has been with us in one form or another for a very long time. This talk takes us from ancient practitioners, through the innovations of the 1800's and 1930's to the cutting edge practice of anaesthesia today. Murderous Anaesthetists This talk features the changing relationship between Medicine (and anaesthesia in particular) and the Law, from the 1800's onwards. Were these Mistakes, Malpractice, Manslaughter or Murder? How to Climb Kilimanjairo This talk is a pictorial record of a group of men (who should have known better) climbing the highest mountain in Africa. Plan your route, avoid "mountain sickness" and be the envy of all your friends. The Oberammergau Passion Play The talk traces the 10 year cycles of the most famous Passion Play in the world, from the 1630's to 2022. It has been cancelled only twice, despite wars and pandemics, and has some surprising people associated with it! Gaudi and the Sagrada Familia An examination of the man and his most famous (as yet unfinished) Basilica. The sheer scale of this remarkable building can leave no-one unmoved. The South African Wars This can be given as a linked cycle of 3 talks - The Zulu Wars, The First Boer War and The Second Boer War or as a condensed version. History doesn't treat the British well in these conflicts, but there are two sides to every story. The Opium Wars (preparing for 2025) These little known conflicts had far reaching effects on China and its relationships with the rest of the world, giving rise to some of the Geo-Political anomalies we see in the 21st Century. |
