Subjects:I'm an Associate Professor at the University of Leeds. I research and write non-fiction history books on topics mainly related to York in the time of the Tudors and the Stuarts. My talks are well-researched, accessible and engaging. Depending on the subject, I can akso tailor some of the content to items most relevant to the group or location. I donate my speaker fees to St Leonard's Hospice in York, raising thousands of pounds in recent years.

1) Guy Fawkes, the Gunpowder Plot and the Yorkshire Connections - On 5th November each year we celebrate the failure of the Gunpowder Plot with bonfires and fireworks but what really happened? This talk covers Guy Fawkes's background in Tudor York, the history of the Gunpowder Plot and the myriad of Yorkshire connections.

2) True Tales of Tudor York - This talk explores the history of York during the reign of the Tudors, the people who lived there and others who shaped their lives. Expect royal visits, rebellions, religious unrest, the treatment of the poor, politics and the lives of ordinary people.

3) York in the Time of James I - This talk explores the history of York during the reign of the first Stuart monarch in the early 17th century. Topics include a devastating plague, the mini ice age, royal visits and the lives of ordinary people.

4) Life and Death of Margaret Clitherow in Tudor York - This talk covers the fascinating history behind the life and death of Margaret Clitherow, a woman accused of harbouring Catholic priests in Tudor York during the reign of Elizabeth I. Incredibly, her step father was Lord Mayor of York at the time. Margaret's story combines politics, intrigue and ultimately martyrdom.

5) Arguing Archbishops of Tudor York - "Much more interesting than it sounds," said one attendee the first time I gave the talk. I created it when one local history group asked if I could give another talk after they'd heard all the topics I had at the time and it's proved to be very popular. The talk covers interesting stories about the twelve archbishops of Tudor York, including fallings out, attempted murder in the Minster, a controversial marriage and much more besdies.
