|Subjects:||1) 'A Life Remembered' - A Talk by Jane about her Gt. Grandfather George Piercy, who founded a Mission in Canton, China in 1851. A farmer's son from Pickering in North Yorkshire. His mission was achieved despite fierce opposition and the loss of his wife and child. They had met at Nunnington Hall. After 30 years he returned and continued his mission work in the East End of London working with the Chinese there. His affection for China was boundless and he is revered today by many in China. Truly a remarkable Yorkshireman. (Photo of a poster from Hong Kong). Various family Chinese objects illustrate the talk.
2) 'For the Love of China' - This Talk is about the missionary women, many of whom lived short lives due to harshness of the conditions they worked in. Two women in particular are featured - Jane Wannop Piercy, who married the love of her life George Piercy and followed him out to China. She started a number schools for Chinese girls and women, many of whom lived closed lives. Jane was assisted by Mary Gunson, another young women devoted to the Chinese. Mary?s letters sent from Canton brilliantly illustrate their lives. Chinese objects illustrate the talk.
3) 'A Journey on the historical Silk Road' - This Talk is exploring three countries encountered on the Silk Road, such as Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan with visits to such cities of legend such as Bukhara, Samarkand and Khiva. A period when the Silk Road was busy with caravans. The Talk is fully illustrated with many of the extraordinary buildings which in some cases date back to the 10th century and how even today the Silk Road is becoming important again to Russia and China.
