By building a stone wall around the parkland of his ancestral home, in Walton, near Wakefield, and banning the gun, Charles Waterton created the first nature reserve. He travelled widely, and was a renowned taxidermist. Visitors to his home included Darwin and William Makepeace Thackeray. In 2013 Sir David Attenborough visited, which says much of Waterton's standing as a naturalist. |
