In the Victorian era art galleries were full of working class visitors and were often open till 10.00p.m. to accomodate the workers. Today less than 8% of visitors to our great galleries are working class. The talk is based on my book with the above title. It asks when and why the working classes stopped visiting galleries and why this matters.

In Paris in 1900 Monet, Manet, Degas and many other male artists were revolutionising western art
but the women artists working at the same time have been erased from history. The talk explores how Paris became the European Capital of Culture and City of Light, discusses women Impressionists and explores why they have been forgotten.
